New to Marathon? These ten tips cover loadouts, extraction timing, and the mistakes that get most rookies killed on Tau Ceti IV.

Marathon does not hold your hand. Bungie’s extraction shooter dropped on March 5, 2026 for $39.99, and the first thing most new Runners learn is that dying costs you everything you carried in. If you are about to load into Perimeter for the first time, these tips will save you a lot of pain.

1. Do not bring your best gear early

Your first ten runs are for learning, not earning. Take cheap kits. You will die, and that is fine — what matters is learning spawn points, loot rooms, and extraction zones without losing gear you care about.

2. Learn one map at a time

Perimeter is the friendliest starting zone. Stay there until you can navigate without opening the map. Dire Marsh punishes players who wander — the AI security forces there hit harder and third-parties are constant.

3. Sound is everything

Marathon’s time-to-kill is brutally fast. Most fights are decided by who heard the other team first. Play with headphones, walk instead of sprinting when you are near a point of interest, and stop moving when you hear gunfire to work out where it is coming from.

4. Meds and ammo are scarce — plan for it

Bungie has kept the med and ammo economy tight since the Server Slam. Back-to-back fights will drain your reserves fast, so always loot AI drops after a fight even if the gear is junk.

5. Extract early, extract often

Greed kills more Runners than aimbots ever will. If you have a decent haul twenty minutes in, take it home. A small profit banked beats a big loss every time.

6. Pick a shell that forgives mistakes

Runner shells matter more than most rookies think. We break down every option in our Runner shell guide, but the short version: tanky and simple beats flashy while you learn.

7. Duo queue beats solo queue

Solo play in Marathon is a different, harder game. If you have no friends playing, use the in-game looking-for-group tools. One extra set of eyes doubles your survival rate.

8. Watch how you die

Every death teaches something — a rotation you did not check, a lane you crossed without cover. If you keep dying to players who seem to know exactly where you are, some of them are using ESP tools; sites like marathoncheat.com exist precisely because map knowledge is that valuable in this game. Knowing what wallhacks can and cannot see helps you position smarter either way — our ESP explainer covers the details.

9. Do your faction contracts

Faction reputation unlocks better vendor gear. Contracts also give your run a purpose beyond “loot and leave,” which keeps you moving with intent instead of wandering.

10. Do not quit at level 10

Marathon’s learning curve is a wall. IGN’s reviewer put over 65 hours in before calling it his favorite extraction shooter, and most players say the game clicks somewhere around level 20. Push through — the loot grind on the other side is genuinely addictive.
