Marathon Runner Shells Explained: Pick the Right One for Your Playstyle

Vandal, Sentinel, Rook and the rest — what each Marathon Runner shell actually does and which one suits how you play.

In Marathon lore, Runners imprint copies of their consciousness into artificial bodies called shells before dropping onto Tau Ceti IV. In gameplay terms, your shell is your class — and picking the wrong one for your playstyle makes an already hard game harder.

The aggressive shells

Vandal is the straightforward fighter and the shell most new players should start with. Its kit rewards taking fights without demanding perfect ability usage. The Achromatic Rush skin made it the most-seen shell in Season 1 lobbies, and not just for looks.

Assassin and Destroyer trade safety for kill pressure. Both got new premium styles in the Season 1 reward pass update, and both are unforgiving — if you whiff your engage, you usually die.

The survival shells

Rook is the scavenger. After Season 2 pulled its claymore-and-shotgun arsenal, Bungie more than doubled Recuperation’s healing in Update 1.1.5, so Rook is much less dependent on finding Patch Kits mid-run. If you like long, loot-heavy runs and avoiding fights, Rook is your shell.

Triage keeps teams alive and is easily the most valuable shell in a coordinated trio. Solo Triage is rough — your kit helps others more than you.

The information shells

Recon and Thief are about knowing things and taking things. Recon’s wall-adjacent intel tools are the closest legal equivalent to the ESP setups we described in our Marathon ESP explainer — which tells you something about how valuable information is in this game.

Sentinel, added in Season 2, sits between fighter and trapper. Update 1.1.5 buffed Snare Mine into a reliable damage tool and removed the easy counter to Prey Tracker, so Sentinel is finally worth learning. Bungie has said it is watching Sentinel’s numbers for the rest of the season.

Which shell should you main?

  • Learning the game? Vandal
  • Playing solo? Rook or Vandal
  • Trio with comms? Triage plus Sentinel plus anything
  • Chasing kills? Assassin, once you know the maps cold

Shells reset nothing between seasons — your unlock progress carries — so experiment freely. And whichever you pick, our beginner tips apply to all of them.
